DC vs AC Solar Pumps: Which Technology Is Better for Rajasthan Agriculture?

Solar-powered pumps use one of two electrical technologies: direct current motors powered directly from the panels, or alternating current motors powered through a Variable Frequency Drive. The choice matters significantly for performance, reliability, and cost.

DC Solar Pumps

DC pumps run directly on the DC electricity generated by solar panels. There is no inverter in the power path, meaning fewer components to fail and slightly higher energy conversion efficiency.

DC pumps start well in low light conditions, beginning to pump earlier in the morning and continuing later in the evening. DC pumps are the standard choice for submersible applications up to 5HP.

AC Solar Pumps

AC pump systems use a VFD to convert DC solar power into three-phase AC for a standard induction motor. This means any standard pump motor can be driven by solar — useful when retrofitting solar to an existing pump.

AC systems are more commonly used for larger pumps from 5HP and above, where spare parts availability across Rajasthan is better.

Our Recommendation

New installation, borewell up to 200 feet depth, 3HP to 5HP requirement: DC submersible pump. Simple, reliable, excellent low-light performance.

7.5HP or above, or where an existing AC motor is in good condition: AC solar pump with VFD.

We carry both technologies from 2HP to 10HP and will recommend the right one after assessing your borewell depth and required flow rate.
